John Paul Jones, Man About Town

John Paul Jones has been the man about town this week, spotted playing bass, mandolin and harmonizing with Seasick Steve to promote the new Seasick Steve album, Hubcap Music, which will be released next Tuesday.

Jones joined Seasick Steve on an appearance on Later with Jools Holland on Tuesday night - the show was rebroadcast in a larger "extended version," on Friday night. On Wednesday, Jones joined SS onstage for the full show at the Roundhouse in London with Robert Plant in the audience. According to #incrediblesteve, "John Paul Jones played 7 different instruments during the show."

On Friday night, Steve took his hubcap guitars to Scotland, where Jones and drummer Dan Magnusson again took the stage with him in Edinburgh and again in Manchester Saturday night.

John Paul Jones to Join Seasick Steve on Later... with Jools Holland

Next Tuesday, April 30th, John Paul Jones will join Seasick Steve on Later... with Jools Holland to play songs from the upcoming Seasick Steve album, Hubcap Music.

Meanwhile, Patty Griffin has released a video of her first song from her upcoming album, American Kid.

The song, Ohio, is an historical piece about slaves escaping via the underground railroad. Robert Plant sings a harmony vocal throughout the haunting, evocative song.

Griffin first premiered the song at a Sensational Space Shifters show in London last July.

John Paul Jones at Hardly Strictly

John Paul Jones joined Robyn Hitchcock on stage at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Fransisco's Golden Gate Park to play the song Glass Hotel yesterday.

"Just imagine your listening to this out doors, on a sunny day in the park," Hitchcock told the crowd.

Watch at 1:45 to 1:55, where Hitchcock says something to Jones which makes Jones laugh and stop playing for a second.




The free festival takes place every year and features a number of acts. Hitchcock performed on the Porch Stage, which Jones also played on with Seasick Steve later in the day.



Last year Robert Plant and the Band of Joy opened the Banjo Stage on the Friday night of the festival. Plant also joined Patty Griffin during her set on the Saturday portion.

Busy Weekend for John Paul Jones

John Paul Jones has been seen around town with his new BFF, Seasick Steve this weekend. On Saturday, Seasick Steve played the legendary Roundhouse as part of the iTunes festival.

Steve was joined on stage by Jones, Jack White and Alison Mosshart to play Write Me A Few Lines.



On Sunday, Jones and Seasick Steve turned up at Milton Keynes and joined the Foo Fighters onstage to play Steve's Back in the Doghouse.



Jones has joined Steve a number of times to play Back in the Doghouse, and other songs, lately, and Jones performed on the song on Seasick Steve's new album, You Can't Teach An Old Dog New Tricks.

Triple-Play Weekend for Members of Zeppelin

It was a big weekend in the world of Led Zeppelin, with three of the four members of the band that performed at the O2 arena in Dec, 2007 playing this weekend.

On Sunday night, Robert Plant and the Band of Joy took the stage in Tennessee at the annual Bonnaroo festival. Reviews are strong, as they have been for The Band of Joy since they began touring together last year.

On the other side of the ocean, one of Britain's biggest and oldest festivals, the Isle of Wight, featured Plant's old bandmate, John Paul Jones. Jones stepped on stage with at Isle of Wight with a Gibson bass Saturday Night, backing up itinerant bluesman Seasick Steve.

Jones appeared on Seasick Steve's latest album, You Can't Teach an old Dog New Tricks, and has been stepping out at various gigs with Steve. An interactive video of last months Streets of London concert is currently available on at SeasickSteve.com.

Finally, Jason Bonham began the first tour with his band, Black Country Communion last week.

On Friday Night, Black Country Communion played their second show of the tour in Anaheim. The band kicked through a 16 song set, half of which came from their new album, "2."

Aubrey Stewart, a Led Zeppelin fan from Texas, travelled to Anaheim to catch the show. He later commented that,

BCC rocked.  They are excited about what they are doing and it showed... If you get the chance, go see these guys you wont' be disappointed.

Jimmy Page, it is rumoured, spent the weekend writing HTML code, after showing up at Royal albert Hall with Donovan last weekend.

John Paul Jones' New Tricks

During recording of his new album, itinerant bluesman Seasick Steve and his drummer, Dan Magnusson, decided to try something new. Bring in a bass player.

“Why don’t we just get the guy from Led Zeppelin?” said Magnusson.

Steve thought it absurd, but made a call to someone who works with the bassist. The guy from Led Zeppelin, John Paul Jones called back: “I don’t mean to bug ya, but, you know, you want to play?” he asked.

“Yep!”

Jones came in and played on two tracks on Seasick Steve’s new album, You Can’t Teach an Old Dog New Tricks, released on MP3 this week.

The title track and Back in the Doghouse, are rockin’ slide guitar blues, that Jones adds a solid back beat too. Nothing fancy, but a solid groove below good, fun songs. Imagine a light-hearted version of In My Time of Dying, and you would be in the right neighbourhood.

If you are looking for some new music to pick up, consider Seasick Steve’s You Can’t Teach an Old Dog New Tricks for some good rollickin’ fun songs.
