John Paul Jones = Uno Coyote

Last week it was announced that John Paul Jones would perform in Helsinki in April with composer Magnus Lindberg. It appears that in fact, Jones has formed a new group with Lindberg and cellist Anssi Karttunen called Tres Coyotes.

The band now has a logo, a webpage and it appears as though further dates will be coming.

Lindberg and Karttunen both come from the world of modern classical music. A listen to Karttunen performing Lindberg's Cello Concerto suggests a very modern approach, with soundscapes, fast, very fast runs and prominent use of dissonance, suggesting a group that will fall into the avant-garde style that Jones has previously worked in with Supersilent and Minibus Pimps.

However, with as much talent as will be assembled onstage, we can hold out hope for more than aural  soundscapes and controlled noise. Thinking back to the late 70's early 80's when classical guitarist John Williams with Cliff Richards' guitarist Kevin Peek and former T-Rex bassist Herbie Flowers formed Sky. The band featured players that were all session musicians well versed in many styles, and played songs ranging from Bach to rock, with some jazz and other influences thrown in.

Tres Coyotes offers similar multi-style promise, but we'll have to wait until April to see what these three talented musicians have to offer together.
