O2 Rehearsal MP3's Leaked

Leading up to the Dec 2007 Led Zeppelin reunion at the O2 arena in London, the members of Led Zeppelin met at the Shepperton studios, in the UK to rehearse. An MP3 version of four of the rehearsal songs has leaked online at The Big O Zine.

The four songs are Good Times, Bad Times, For Your Life, Since I've Been Loving You and Rock and Roll. On the Led Zeppelin newsgroup FBO, commentators have been mixed on the release. Some have commented on Jimmy Page's superior playing, John Paul Jones sounding strong. Others have noted that Robert Plant is not giving 100% (not uncommon for singers at rehearsal), and that Good Times, Bad Times and Rock and Roll are being played a key lower than originally recorded. For my money, all those comments are correct, but would add I don't like Jimmy Page's tone, especially on Good Times, Bad Times.

However, this is historically interesting and important archival material. Listen also for the harmony vocals on the chorus Good Times, Bad Times - Jason Bonham, perhaps?

The songs are currently only available on MP3, but are still well worth a listen for any Led Zeppelin fan.

Robert Plant is offering a free download off the third song on the Band of Joy album, Central Two-O-Nine.

Here's what I said about Central Two-O-Nine when I reviewed Band of Joy back in September:

Central Two-O-Nine is ‘old timey,’ mandolin and resonator guitar based up-tempo dirge. Did they have distortion in the depression? If they did, this is what it would have sounded like.

Stephen LeBlanc, keyboard player, lap steel guitar and back up guitarist in Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience, is making his second album, Leftovers, availibale for free download.

According to Stephen LeBlanc's Facebook page, Leftovers is "songs recorded mostly at home between 2005-2009. Elly LeBlanc lends vocal talents and a bit of songwriting."

The files are in M4a format and will be usable on any iTunes compatible computer or MP3 player.

Zeppelin: Coming to a Mobile Phone Near You.

I start this blog by blowing my own horn, sort of. Yesterday, on another blog I write, I made this observation:

Led Zeppelin... one of the last bands to make their back catalogue downloadable, this week announced that they would begin to do so.

Hopefully this means an end to those Kashmir polyphonic ring tones and we can get some real Zeppelin on our cell phones.

Today comes word that this is exactly what will happen:

Hot on the heels of the news that Led Zeppelin will make its vast music catalog available online, starting with an exclusive U.S. mobile agreement with Verizon Wireless, comes word that O2 has snagged the rights to offer the catalog to cell phone customers in Britain.

Like Verizon Wireless, O2 will offer Zeppelin ringtones and other mobile features. Customers who download Zeppelin ring tone will be entered into a drawing for one of six tickets the company is giving away to the sold-out show—one of the most highly anticipated rock concerts in years.

Move over Foo Fighters, my cell phone's getting A Whole Lotta Love.
