Review Week - Day 3: Celebration Day Bluray/DVD

Having previously seeing Celebration Day, and loving it it, at the movie theaters, I wasn't expecting any surprises watching it at home on Blu-Ray. 314275_10152082455220276_1350235277_nIt is an excellent concert movie that puts the viewer on-stage in the middle of the action. Watching at home does offer, however, certain advantages and certain disadvantages. You can stop, repeat and review a song or part of a song at home. At the theatre you pay for atmosphere, to not have to put up with distractions and superior theatre sound.

So how come it sounded so much better on my weak Akai sound system circa 1988? Left alone on a Sunday afternoon, I was able to turn it up and just enjoy the concert. It was the perfect home viewing experience.

Lets be clear, if you saw the movie in the theaters, it is exactly the same concert movie. There is nothing new, and the viewing and audio experience is limited only by your personal setup. it was an excellent movie then, and it is excellent sitting in the living room in front of a roaring fire.

Celebration Day

Audio And Video From Legendary 2007 Concert
To Be Available In Multiple Configurations On November 19

314275_10152082455220276_1350235277_nConcert Slated For Global Theatrical Release On October 17

(Los Angeles, Sept. 13, 2012) – On December 10, 2007, Led Zeppelin took the stage at London’s O2 Arena to headline a tribute concert for dear friend and Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun. What followed was a two-hour-plus tour de force of the band’s signature blues-infused rock ’n’ roll that instantly became part of the legend of Led Zeppelin. Founding members John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant were joined by Jason Bonham, the son of their late drummer John Bonham, to perform 16 songs from their celebrated catalog including landmark tracks “Whole Lotta Love,” “Rock And Roll,” “Kashmir,” and “Stairway To Heaven.”

Although 20 million people applied for tickets, the band’s first headline show in 27 years was seen only by the 18,000 ticket holders who were fortunate enough to have secured seats through the worldwide lottery.

The film of Celebration Day will see a worldwide theatrical release by Omniverse Vision on 1,500 screens in over 40 territories on October 17. The theatrical screenings will follow premieres in London, Los Angeles, New York, and other major cities. Tickets for the public screenings will be available on September 13 via ledzeppelin.com.

Celebration Day will then be available in multiple video and audio formats on November 19 from Swan Song/Atlantic Records. Specific product details will be announced soon.

O2 DVD Announcement Coming

The countdown is on. With a '5' in the traditional Houses of the Holy font appearing on their Facebook page Saturday, Led Zeppelin announced something was up. Sunday was 'four', Led Zeppelin 4 style, and yesterday a 'III', ala the third album. So what of today? You guessed it, brown bomber style:

564692_380996148639496_1489110138_n

What can it all mean? Jeff Strawman has a good accounting of the possible theories, only one of which makes any sense whatsoever: the O2 DVD/Bluray will see commercial release.

blast-offThere is no surprise here as it was talked about heavily last year, and then died suddenly on the vine. Rumours of it being issued this year  began a few months ago, and last week was seemingly confirmed by a Belgium radio station. That post was taken down after a day, suggesting not necessarily inaccuracy, but that the original post was premature. And so it seems it is.

Early this morning, the Sun newspaper in the UK reported that the O2 DVD/Bluray is being released on November 22nd.

As well, over the last 2 days, video has been appearing on the Facebook page and the band's official YouTube page. Here's today's:

As for the countdown, know that five years ago on day zero, September 13, the band announced the reunion show. Seriously, it's a CD/DVD/Bluray and nothing else.

Gentleman (and ladies), start your Christmas list.

November Release?

A radio station blog out of Belgium, Classic 21, is reporting this morning that Led Zeppelin will release a DVD and CD of their 162_9108650567_1862_nDecember 2007 performance at the O2 arena in London. Here is a translation of the main body of the post:
The famous Led Zeppelin concert in London at the O2 Arena in 2007 double DVD released in November.

According to Warner Music , a double DVD, accompanied by two CDs, the resume legendary concert which took place in 2007 at the 02 Arena, where 9 million people had tried to buy 18,000 tickets available.

No complete set had been given since 1979. Among the crowd, there were Paul McCartney, Noel and Liam Gallagher, David Gilmour, Arctic Monkeys, Kate Moss and Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters.

Note that Classic 21 is saying it will be a double DVD/Bluray and a CD release as well - presumably a vinyl issue will be in the mix as well.

A representative from Robert Plant's management office couldn't confirm the release and queries to Warner Brothers, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones representatives have so far been unanswered.

As of now, this is strictly a rumour.

Classic 21 is one of Belgium's largest radio stations, formerly part of the Belgium public radio network RTBF (Belgian Radio and Television of the French Community). It is the largest chain of radio traffic in French speaking Belgium and is listened to widely in the north of France.

I will update this story as more information emerges.

******************
Update: a change has been made removing writing credit for the Classic 21 post as it may have been inaccurate. The original post is, in fact, unsigned,

Update 2: From the comments:
The article seems to have been removed altogether from Classic 21’s site…unfortunate..

DVD Review: Robert Plant and the Band of Joy Live From the Artists Den

The presser for the Robert Plant and the Band of Joy Live From The Artists Den DVD states that Plant presents "six Led Zeppelin classics..." Yea, well...  If you've come here from a google search for "Whatever happened to Robert Plant Led Zeppelin?", stop reading now. That Robert Plant left the building some time ago.

robert-plant-the-band-of-joy-dvd-cover-1

If, however, you have followed and enjoyed Robert Plant's solo career, keep reading, there's good news.

Live From The Artists Den was recorded on Feb 8 and 9th, 2011 at the intimate War Memorial Auditorium. The Band of Joy had progressed and developed over the winter of 2011, and by this stage had developed a bit of an edge. That edge is in full flower on the Live From The Artists Den DVD of reworked Led Zeppelin songs, songs from the the Band of Joy album and some old-timey Americana.

Truthfully, by the time The Band of Joy rolled into Nashville even a known to be sceptical blogger was becoming sold that Band of Joy was doing some interesting music. That impression is proven fully on Live From The Artists Den.

The Band of Joy was fully a band in every sense of the word by the time this show was recorded for PBS. So far gone is the Golden God from the land of ice and snow that Plant takes a secondary position on a series of songs while guitarists Buddy Miller, Darrell Scott and his "companion" Patty Griffin take a song each. Plant even moves into the background physically during these moments, doing his best bass-less John Paul Jones imitation.

But the Band of Joy had an edge, and it is fully on display on Live From The Artists Den. While Plant purrs his vocals, the guitars virtually growl, giving a dark, rock edge to the country and traditional tinged setlist.

The DVD itself is first rate, the videography providing an intimate feel - catching the band members smiling at each other for example - and spreading the screen time around the band. This is no Robert Plant show, and no Robert Plant DVD. It is Band of Joy all the way.

If you missed the Band of Joy when they came around, as I did, it's OK: you can see them now up close and personal, a DVD so good it feel like your there.

Information on the DVD is here, including the tracklist.

Band of Joy DVD

Last April PBS, the American public broadcasting channel featured a Robert Plant and the Band of Joy concert on their Live From the Artists Den series. This week Artists Den and Universal Music announced that Robert Plant & the Band of Joy: Live from the Artists Den would be released on DVD and Blue Ray. Here's a partial press release:

Artists Den Entertainment and Universal Music Group will releaseRobert Plant & the Band of Joy: Live from the Artists Den on 5.1 BluRay and DVD in the US on July 10th. On July 9th, these products will be released internationally under exclusive license through Universal Music Group International. This epic show was filmed as a rare, intimate performance at the historic War Memorial Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee. Selections from the show aired nationwide on public television's Live from the Artists Den, the hit music series featuring acclaimed artists performing in extraordinary settings. Now released in full for the first time, the DVD features bonus interview clips and concert footage not included in the television broadcast, including six Led Zeppelin classics, three of which have never been shown before.

The DVD will also be presented as a featured story and product release for public television's National Pledge starting July 26th, The series is a production of Artists Den Entertainment in association with WNET New York Public Media, and is distributed by American Public Television.

By my reading of that, there will be material on the DVD/BlueRay that was not on the original show.

Release date is July 9th internationally, July 10th in US and Canada.

Black Country Communion: Live Over Europe

Black Country Communion: Live Over Europe hit the shelves in DVD format this week with rather a whimper in my part of the world. black-country-communion-live-over-europe1

The DVD was available Monday in Europe and Tuesday here in North America. In my little part of Canada the large electronics chain didn't have it, and HMV had three copies squirrelled away in the concert DVD section, not up front in the new release display.

The concert film is almost two hours long (1:49 specifically) and features performances of 16 songs. To put things succinctly, the footage is top notch, the sound quality excellent and the performance as good as it gets. Black Country Communion is an excellent live band, and that tells in this DVD.

The second disk in the 2-disk set features a 25 minute feature video, Forging BCC, The Making of Live Over Europe and two photo collections.

The video will be available in Blu-ray November 15th (14th in Europe).

There was talk of an audio release as well, but that talk seems to have dried up, and I can find no evidence of a CD/MP3 release coming soon.

Robert Plant's Blue Note: DVD Review

The blue note is a musical term for a note that is played slightly flat, “for expressive purposes.” The blue note, in point of fact, differentiates itself from the normal musical expression, creating a sound, a feeling that is wholly different with greater feeling.

Naming the unauthorized Robert Plant DVD The Blue Note was no accident. It took Plant’s fondness for the blue note, and extrapolated from it that Plant is a wholly different singer who sings with greater feeling. The blue note is, in other words, where Plant finds his inspiration and where his influence lies.

planetblueAt two hours and thirty-five minuets long The Blue Note is surprisingly not comprehensive, as Plant’s Led Zeppelin period is breezed over in twenty minutes of film time. While this allows for a solid look at Plant’s solo years, specifically from 1981 to 1994 when he performed Unledded with Jimmy Page, far too much time is spent on Plants early influences. The first half hour covers his blues influences, with video footage of Howlin’ Wolf, Sony Boy Williamson and the Jeff Beck era Yardbirds doing Train Kept a Rollin’. While much of this is interesting and worth seeing, it’s possibly too much for a DVD on Robert Plant.

The west coast influences of Moby Grape, Jefferson Starship and Buffalo Springfield are also covered, including video footage that feels too common. It is unnecessary and far too much time is taken up covering the people Robert Plant listened too. It is almost inexcusable that Led Zeppelin doesn’t come up in a Robert Plant retrospective until the 45 minute mark, but that’s what occurs here.

The problem is compounded with a pathetically short feature on Led Zeppelin, as if hey were a small band Robert Plant was in before going on to bigger and better things. It is twenty minutes from Peter Grant and Jimmy Page going to see Robert Plant perform to the death of John Bonham. So short on information during this period is the DVD that the death of Plants young son, Karak, in 1977 gets a one sentence mention, along with the death of John Bonham. Every album from the fourth on is ignored. It is as if Led Zeppelin had two good albums, the acoustic third album and Kashmir, which the video takes five minutes of time to explain the genesis of the one song.

It is the five minutes devoted to Kashmir that really develops the theme of Robert Plant’s Blue Note, namely that the blue note is not just an American phenomenon, but African in origin: Robert Plant has searched North and West Africa for it, finding the link between American and African music. This theme is why Arab singer Oum Kalthoum get’s six minutes of video time, explaining her influence on Slow Dancer, and Stairway to Heaven doesn’t rate a mention.

The video segments from the Led Zeppelin period are also a disappointment as they show clips of Whole Lotta Love and I Can’t Quit You Baby from the 1970 Albert Hall show, and Kashmir from the 1979 Knebworth show. All three performances are publicly available on the Led Zeppelin DVD set. The Page and Plant material is also supplemented with songs from the Unledded DVD, nothing that any moderate Led Zeppelin or Robert Plant fan doesn’t already have in their collection. One clip of Robert Plant backstage in 1973, originally from The Song Remains the Same is actually credited, “Copyright Swan Song 1970.”

However, the time and effort spent on his solo years is as good as the early part of the DVD is disappointing. Starting with gigging as the Honeydrippers before spending any studio time, the first part of Plant’s solo career is talked through mainly by Robbie Blunt, Plant’s guitar player and songwriting partner. Blunt is funny and interesting, telling stories and explaining the music. His pride in the first two albums is clear, the third, Shaken ‘n’ Stirred less so. Plant was, by 1985, restless. And in a pattern Plant fans know too well, decided a change was needed. He was searching, and the band behind him simply couldn’t follow. Blunt’s telling the story of his struggles with the Roland Guitar Synthesizer, and Plant’s insistence that Jimmy Page is getting along fine with his is worth the price of the DVD:
...Trying to record with the Roland Guitar Synth, I really tried (laughs) to utilize this piece of crap, because obviously the latency. And Robert Would say, “I don’t know what’s the matter with you, Jimmy’s getting on fine with his.” And Benji called up Jimmy’s guitar tech and he said, “he’s fuckin’ thrown ‘is out the window.

From 1988, Now and Zen, until 1993’s Fate of Nations is told largely by Phil Johnson who co-wrote many songs with Plant and produced his albums in this period. Johnson is , like Blunt, funny and easy going. His stories are incisive and help tell a fairly complete picture of Plant’s musical life at this time. He also, by the end, is frustrated by Plant’s need for change.

Blue Note returns to it's thesis here, Plant's search for the blue note in African music, a search that ultimately frustrated those he worked with, and led him back to Jimmy Page.

The first Page and Plant album is again, well covered, with emphasis on it’s North African influence. Plant turned to Page, according to the DVD, not to relive Led Zeppelin, but because he found himself in a place musically where he couldn’t get the sound he wanted. Jimmy Page could.

Percussionist Hossam Ramzy, who recorded on the unLedded album and toured with Page and Plant carried the narrative for this section. He connects dots and draws lines between American Blues, Led Zeppelin and African music. His amazement at listening to Since I’ve Been Loving You every night, his story of taking two weeks of rehearsals to get the percussion for Friends down, all provide a interesting backdrop for the tour and album.

Plant’s career post-Page and Plant is covered with less detail, but in a good light. Journalist Amanda Petrusich fills in the gaps about Alison Krauss, but ultimately little is added to the story once Plant’s African infatuation ends with Strange Sensation.

While DVD’s of this type are usually filled with journalists making a few extra bucks pontificating for the cameras, Blue Note actually pulls together an impressive list of people to help weave the Robert Plant story together: Led Zeppelin authors Nigel Williamson and Barry Hoskyns; Fellow musicians Tom McGuinness (from Manfred Mann), Hossam Ramzy, Chris Dreja, Robbie Blunt as well as producer/song writer Phil Johnson. Plant himself is represented via a CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) interview in 2010.

If you are a Led Zeppelin fan, Blue Note is probably a DVD you can take a pass on, but if you are a fan of Robert Plant’s solo work and, especially as I am, his work from 1980 - 1995, then this is a great DVD. It covers his career, without delving into personal life, with great detail through those years. It make a convincing argument that Plant spent a career searching for the Blue Note, and perhaps still is searching.

Derek Sherinian on BCC

sherinian-hughesKeyboardist Derek Sherinian has been largely the quiet one when it comes to Black Country Communion, and interviews with him seem to be rarer than with the bands other three members, Glenn Hughes, Joe Bonamassa and Jason Bonham. With a new solo album coming out, however, he sat down with Bravewords, and managed to spill the beans on what's next for BCC:
Bravewords.com: Black Country Communion - what’s it like working with the voice of rock, Glenn Hughes.

Sherinian: “Glenn is great with his British wit. He’s the elder statesman of rock and it’s a real pleasure to tour with him. The last nine weeks (touring) have been a very smooth ride. I’d love to do more touring with these guys.”

Bravewords.com: True, but why only Europe? Why no BCC in North America?

Sherinian: “We need to do a proper North American tour. We just need to go out there and grind it out.”

Bravewords.com: It’s strange. The first album was great. The second album was better, but the band remains largely hidden from North America.

Sherinian: “It all comes down to demand. We’re selling a lot more records in Europe and the demand for us to play live is greater there. You have to go where the warm current is.”

Bravewords.com: What’s next for BCC?

Sherinian: “Well, we are putting out a live DVD from this last European tour for Christmas and the plan is to make a third record next spring and then next June (2012) we’re going back on tour, but I’m not sure where. That’s the rough sketch.”

The DVD we knew about, but BCC3, plus another summer tour. As I said in the podcast, it's the to come to parts north.
