Influencing Jimmy Page for Record Store Day

Record Store Day's now annual "Black Friday" event this is year on November 23rd at record stores around the world.

418455061341In the past couple of years, Record Store Day has featured the -release of some Jimmy Page era Yardbirds singles. This year, it is one of Page's main influences that gets the record store day re-release: a limited edition 7" single of Bert Jansch's Blackwater Side.

From the Record Store Day webpage:

2 track 7" of previously released but long out of print Bert Jansch recordings. Mastered exclusively for 7" by Paul Stubblebine. Liner notes edited from the transcript of an unpublished interview with Neil Young, as told to Sylvie Simmons. Strictly limited to 1000 copies.

Blackwater Side is based on the traditional tune Down by Blackwaterside and is very similar to the arrangement Jimmy Page would use for Black Mountain Side on Led Zeppelin's first album three years later.

Record Store Day

Saturday April 16th is Record Store Day, a day when music fans can celebrate their community record store through special releases, both old and new.

Last year Led Zeppelin fans had something new to line up for outside their local record store: Them Crooked Vultures Mind Eraser, No Chaser picture disc EP.

418454522953This year it is something old: a 7” 45RPM vinyl re-release of The Yardbirds last single, Goodnight Sweet Josephine. The Jimmy Page era single is from the Little Games sessions, but did not make the cut on the original album. It was released on 1992’s Little Games Sessions & More CD.

The b side is Jimmy Page, Jim McCarty, Keith Relf written song, Think About It.

The single will come with a black and white picture sleeve, with a picture of the four Yardbirds standing sideways and looking at the camera. A smiling Jimmy Page is prominent on the cover.

Visit Record Store Day’s website to find a participating store near you and a comprehensive list of records being released for Record Store Day.

Independent Record Store Day

Saturday April 17 was Independent Record Store Day. Many artists contributed material to be sold exclusively in participating stores, including Them Crooked Vultures. Them Vultures contributed a special 10" picture disc with Mind Eraser, No Chaser from the Them Crooked Vultures LP, and a new, live track, Hwy 1 on side A. Side B is an interview with Liam Lynch. Here's some pictures of the disc in question:

The disc came in a red plastic, semi-transparent envelope. Notice the sticker on the top left corner.

The last line, left of the bar code, is the logo for Record Store Day. Here's the disc, front

Pity Jimmy Page, who has suggested he has new material to release this year, didn't put up a tease for Record Store Day. Guess a cool picture disc will have to do.
